When I leave for work I see some people driving towards school buses who stop when the bus has their red lights on and others who do not stop at all, but rather keep going. I know from talking with others that the laws are different depending on what state you are in. What is the law for Nevada? Are we supposed to stop or not?
Here is what Nevada Law states: NRS: CHAPTER 484 - TRAFFIC LAWS ....and passing school bus: Duties of driver; exceptions; penalties. 1. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 2, the driver of any vehicle, when meeting or overtaking, from either direction, any school bus, equipped with signs and signals required by law, which has stopped to receive or discharge any pupil and is displaying a flashing red light signal visible from the front and rear, shall bring his vehicle to an immediate stop and shall not attempt to overtake or proceed past the school bus until the flashing red signal ceases operation. 2. The driver of a vehicle upon a divided highway need not stop upon meeting or passing a school bus which is positioned in the other roadway. The driver of a vehicle need not stop upon meeting or passing a school bus where traffic is controlled by a traffic officer. 3. Any person who violates any of the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor.
In simple terms, if you are driving one way and come upon a stopped school bus on the opposite side of the road and there is no road divider, island, median, you MUST STOP. If there is one of these traffic control devices (road divider, island, or median) or the traffic is being controlled by a traffic officer you DO NOT NEED TO STOP. If you are driving on the same side of the road as the stopped bus you MUST STOP unless the traffic is being controlled by a traffic officer who motions you to continue. At all times though, you must exercise caution as a stopped bus with flashing lights usually means that children are present.
