October 24, 2002
The North Las Vegas Police Department participated in a
meeting that officially kicked off the design of the new police facility.
This building's appearance will resemble the Las Vegas Metropolitan
Police Departments's North West Area Command, however, the North Las Vegas
Police Department will be enhancing the structure to include Community
and organizational needs, including the following:
- State-of-the-Art computer systems;
- Armory; and a
- Weight Room designed to promote physical fitness.
The design architects worked on creating a lobby that would promote
a warm and inviting atmosphere. One of the anticipated benefits shared
by both employees and the community will be the oversized community room
that can be used for public gatherings.
The building itself has been designed to blend into the surrounding
neighborhood. The outside appearance will further connect the community
with mosaic artwork from one of the local elementary schools.
The location of this facility will allow the North Las Vegas Police
Department to better serve the growing needs of our City.

November 4, 2003
Construction began on the City's first community policing facility. The
new single story, 18,000 square-foot facility was modeled after the Metropolitan
Police Department's prototype station design and modified to meet the
needs of the North Las Vegas Police Department. The project was designed
by KGA Architecture, and the construction contractor is Carson Taylor
Harvey, Inc. Construction management and inspection services are being
provided by the City's Public Works department. The total project cost
is $5.1 million, and all funding will come from General Obligation Judicial/Public
Safety Bonds which as no impact to North Las Vegas taxpayers. The facility
will take approximately 11 months to construct.
The community policing facility will house 125 officers and is needed
to expand the services of the North Las Vegas Police Department. A recent
staffing and facility study prepared by a consultant shows the need for
additional officers and facilities. "This new facility puts officers
and services in the expanding northwest part of our City" explained
Police Chief Mark Paresi. North Las Vegas has grown by 189% since 1990.
When complete, the facility will house a public lobby, community room,
briefing room, crime/evidence analysis areas, interview room, patrol equipment
storage areas, locker rooms, fitness room, kitchen and detective, sergeant,
lieutenant, and administrative offices. On-site improvement on the five-acre
site include a 248 space paved parking lot, drought-tolerant landscaping,
site lighting, masonry security walls, sidewalks, and a decorative tile
art wall to be designed by local students.
November 18th, 2003
The North Las Vegas Police Department in conjunction with the City of
North Las Vegas hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the Washburn/Allen
facility site. Members of the community attended to show support and share
information about what this facility will mean to the neighborhood.
Several state and local dignitaries were present or sent representatives.
The representative for U.S. Senator John Ensign also presented the North
Las Vegas Police Department with a Senatorial Certificate of Congratulations.

Construction continues on the Washburn Community Police
Facility as the earth is trenched in preparation of the laying of utility
conduit and foundations. Stately groves of rebar line the circumference
of the building, thereby ensuring strong walls.
February 11, 2004
Rows of rebar surround the base foundation of the new area command. These
stately bars, topped with tiny orange graduation caps, watch over the
sub-foundation of plumbing, electrical and other utilities.
Progress on the new area command continues as cubes of masonry blocks
sit silently waiting their placement as part of a team to create the perimeter
walls. Each block strong but made stronger by the act of coming together,
much like the community and the police coming together to form a stronger,
safer quality of life.
March 13, 2004
Block by block, the walls of the Washburn Community Police Facility slowly
surround the solid cement foundation. Skeletons of metal outline the many
door frames and cylinder support columns point towards the cloudless blue
sky.

Looking in the distance like Tonka Toys, Sky Traks lift materials to
the workers laying brick at North Las Vegas Police Department's new area
command. As the building takes shape and form, so do the many outreach
programs offered to the community, from D.A.R.E. and Senior Crime Prevention
Awareness Day to Neighborhood Clean Ups and many other such projects.

past, present and future.

As the Southern Nevada desert begins to flower, the construction continues
at the North Las Vegas Washburn Community Police Facility. This facility
itself blooms as the girth and depth of the new area command slowly comes
to life. Windows have been amply designed into this structure to allow
natural sunshine to enter. These are the first pictures taken from inside
the center. Keep watching for the latest developments.

A bird's eye view from East to West shows the Washburn Community Police
Facility in full. Roofs have since been installed and perimeter walls
are now in place. Outside work will now be done on the paving and landscaping
of the facility, while the interior is fitted with walls, fixtures and
other necessary amenities.
November 30, 2004
November 10, 2004 marked the grand opening of the Washburn
Community Police Facility. In an event filled with speeches and a moving
raising of the flags, the building was dedicated to the community and
to the men and women who have sworn to serve and protect those people.
Artwork created by the 2003 5th grade of Eva Wolfe Elementary School
was unveiled on the front of the building to show "a child's perspective"
of the work of a police officer.
Tours of the spacious and well fitted police facility were offered to
all in attendance. Chief Mark S. Paresi was heard to say, "Don't
look at this as being a standard of uniqueness, this is the standard the
community should come to expect."
The building offers a large and comfortable community room for use by
citizens. Also offered is a weight room for the officers, as well as a
private briefing room, quite room, holding cells, and individual/group
office spaces.
The building went into occupied use on November 20, 2004.
