Territoriality Reinforcement

Concept promoted by features that define property lines and distinguish private spaces from public spaces; vested interest being shown in regard for use & maintenance of property by employees and patrons. The use of low fences or different color bricks (for property line marking) still allows for creative design, sending a clear message that someone owns the property and is taking care of it.

Tips for Territorial Reinforcement:

  • Post signs that will clearly define rules for property (i.e. no trespassing, no loitering)
  • Signs should be clearly readable, consider bilingual signs for multi-cultural areas
  • Keep a well maintained property. Showing pride and ownership will discourage criminals, because they do not want to stand out.
Painting over graffiti Front awning with address
Painting over graffiti immediately sends a message that the area is cared for and will be well maintained. This awning clearly defines the barrier from the public area to the office building. Additionally, the address numbers are clearly posted, which could assist emergency personnel in responding more quickly when needed.
