Natural Surveillance

Concept directed to keep patrons and potential offenders easily visible, which will also create in potential offenders a perception of risk. Natural Surveillance is promoted by features that maximize visibility of people, parking areas, and building entrances.

Tips for Natural Surveillance:

  • Windows facing parking areas free of obstruction
  • Interior shelving no higher than five feet
  • Clear visibility maintained from building to street
  • Adequate lighting for night hours on property perimeter and parking lots

Shrubbery completely conceals an office window. Maintain shrubs at window level, and at trimmed at least 12' off the ground. This will reduce the opportunity for concealment of perpetrator.
Use of security cameras, or closed circuit television is a good way to keep property users and their activities in sight.
