G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training)
WHAT IS G.R.E.A.T?
G.R.E.A.T. is a Life Skills program
that is geared to provide students with the skills they need to avoid
gang pressure and youth violence.
G.R.E.A.T. consists of the following four components:
- 13-session middle school curriculum
- 6-session elementary school curriculum
- Summer program
- Families program
G.R.E.A.T.'s violence prevention curriculum helps students develop
beliefs and practice behaviors that will help them avoid destructive behaviors.
G.R.E.A.T. originated through a combined effort of ATF the Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Phoenix Police Department
in 1992.
G.R.E.A.T. underwent a comprehensive five year long-term study
to measure the impact of the program.
Due to it's success, the program was expanded nationwide. The results
of the evaluation demonstrated that students who participated in the program
had:
- Lower rates of victimization
- More negative views about gangs
- More favorable attitudes towards the police
- More peers involved in pro-social activities
- Lower levels of involvement in risk seeking behaviors
The G.R.E.A.T. Curriculum deals with:
