Biography

Shari L. Buck is the mayor of the City of North Las Vegas. She is a native of North Las Vegas, and the first female mayor elected to the post. As mayor, Buck oversees the expansion, development and economic growth of North Las Vegas. She is responsible for an array of community development efforts and projects, many of which she proudly takes the lead in.

During her term, Buck made significant progress in improving the City of North Las Vegas, and spearheaded many projects, facilitating economic growth and development progress. Along with the City Council, she oversaw the expansion of North 5th Street, the largest road improvement project in the city’s history. She also helped guide the development of the new City Hall and Civic Plaza, a 9-story building that consolidates city services and provides open space for community events. Buck has also supported and helped facilitate larger police and fire departments, with the addition of over 150 police officers and 5 fire stations since 2001.

Prior to becoming mayor, Buck served as North Las Vegas City Councilwoman for Ward 4 since 1999. As a council member, she led the city through a period of unprecedented growth, with North Las Vegas being recognized as one of the top five fastest-growing large cities from 2000 to 2008. Through her efforts on city council, the city expanded park space, police protection and fire services to keep pace with the growth in population. She also helped expand the city’s parks by over 400 acres.

In addition to her position as mayor, Buck serves on a number of local government boards and committees. She is chairwoman of the Southern Nevada Water Authority Board and vice-chairwoman of the North Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency. She is also a representative of the Clark County Debt Management Commission and Clean Water Coalition. She is an executive board member of the Civilian Military Council of Southern Nevada, a member of the Deferred Compensation Advisory Committee and an alternate member of the Clark County Regional Flood Control District Citizens Advisory Committee. She is a Silver Level participant in the National League of Cities and is a former member of the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition and Colorado River Commission.

Buck has also remained actively involved in her community and local civic activities. She is member of the Board of Directors for Goodwill of Southern Nevada, and a member of the Oversight Committee for Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Local Program. She is also a former member of the North Las Vegas Library District Board of Trustees.

Prior to being elected to the City Council, Buck worked for the Clark County School District. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and completed the Harvard University Program for Senior Executives at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband Keith and their four children.
