The Employee Development and Safety Division has responded to the need for staff development by offering courses that would help us continuously improve the way we do business.

The safety component within the division is responsible for conducting accident investigations, assisting the Worker’s Compensation Division in determining the causation and corrective action for injured/exposed employees, performing periodic audits of all workplaces, and chairing several safety-related boards.

In response to the ever growing need to develop and fine tune the skills of managers and employees, our training program has created a full line of Management and Employee Development programs. The two-tiered approach allows us to target the important human aspects of an organization.

Management training and development is geared at leadership. By assisting managers in sharpening their skills in communication, delegating, evaluating performance and team building, managers become better leaders. The Employee Development programs are focused on personal and professional growth of the employee, ultimately resulting in a more focused, less stresses and more productive work force. Here is an overview of our program:

Course Description:

1. Core Curriculum- These programs/subjects are the courses selected by the Human Resources Department that make up the required portion of our Employee Development curriculum. They are the central portion of the employee's development and mandatory for all employees:

  1. ADA/Sensitivity Awareness

  2. Worker's Compensation

  3. Performance Appraisal Management Program

  4. Harassment

  5. Employee Assistance Program/Substance Abuse

  6. Conflict Resolution

  7. Conquering Negativity

  8. Managing Diversity

  9. Customer Service

  10. Policy and Procedures

2. Individual Skill Building - These programs/subjects are to aid all employees in their professional development. They are provided to expand the growth and strengthen existing and newly acquired skills. These elective courses will hopefully improve a level of competence for all employees:

  1. Time Management

  2. Decision-Making/Problem Solving

  3. Conquering the Challenge of Change

  4. Art of Public Speaking I

  5. Art of Public Speaking II

  6. Interpersonal Communication Skills

  7. Leading and Conducting Effective Meetings

  8. Planning and Organizing Work

  9. Workplace Violence

  10. Train-the-Trainer

  11. Conversational Spanish

3. Supervision and Management- These programs/subjects exist to provide all levels of management with augmentation of knowledge and practical information. These programs are designed for management to achieve an advanced state of leadership. They improve the level of competency in the management skills area. They will aid in strengthening and building confidence in the ability to handle the most challenging of management situations. All courses designed for managers and supervisors are mandatory and will be offered frequently throughout the year to provide ample opportunity for everyone to attend. Listed below are the courses offered:

  1. Coaching and Counseling

  2. Interviewing and Hiring Practices

  3. Discipline

  4. Leadership and Supervision

  5. Safety for Supervisors

  6. Effective Supervisory Management

4. OSHA Mandated Training- The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 requires that each employer shall comply with occupational safety and health standards promulgated under this act. Determining the content of training for employees at a higher level of risk is similar to determining what any employee needs to know, but more emphasis is placed on the requirements of the job and the possibility of injury. The following subjects are mandated for all affected employees:

  1. Emergency Action Plan

  2. Hazard Communication

  3. Bloodborne Pathogens

  4. Portable Fire Extinguisher

  5. Hearing Conservation

  6. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

  7. Forklift Operations

  8. Respiratory Protection

  9. Defensive Driving

  10. First Aid Practices

  11. Confined Spaces

  12. Lockout/Tagout Procedures

  13. Electrical Requirements

  14. Personal Protective Equipment

  15. Fall Protection

5. Elective Safety Training- The following safety subjects have been incorporated into the program as supplementary information to enhance the well being of employees. Although these subjects are not mandated by statute or City policy, they contain material that, hopefully, will assist employees to maintain and improve their personal life and work environment. The following subjects listed below are available for all employees to partake in:

  1. Accident/Incident Investigation

  4. Fall Prevention

  5. Office Hazards

  6. General Safety Awareness

  7. Back Safety
