In addition to the normal fire suppression duties of actively preventing fires, this functional area of the Department provides Advanced Life Support on response vehicles and training to handle hazardous materials incidents, various rescue capabilities, and terrorism incidents. Operations personnel also perform business inspections, pre-incident planning and public education activities.
The Department currently operates with 153 operations personnel divided into two 3-platoon shifts, with 1/3 of them on duty at a time. Each of the 6 platoons is supervised by a Battalion Chief and overseen by the Assistant Chief of Operations and the Deputy Chief. Each apparatus is supervised by a Captain, vehicle operations conducted by an Engineer, and staffed with 2+ firefighters. We regularly man 3 medium duty Rescue/transport units with two + firefighters with the capability to staff up to 6 of these units. The department does not transport except in the case of delayed response by the franchised private ambulance company serving the City. 911 responses are currently assigned by a Dispatch Center operated by 3 member departments (Clark County, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas) regardless of political boundary, an automated dispatch system responds the geographically closest unit to an incident. There are currently 7 stations (Station 51, Station 52, Station 53, Station 54, Station 55, Station 56, and Station 57 in operation.
