FAQ's about Story Time
Do I need to register for story time? Registration for lapsit, toddler time, and preschool story time is recommended. Open registration generally begins three weeks prior to the fall and winter/spring sessions.
How do I register? To register for lapsit, toddler time, or preschool story time, please contact the Family Services staff at the Aliante Library by telephone at 839-2980 or visit anytime during regular library hours.
Which story time is the best for my child? Our story time programs are designed with the developmental needs of your child as the central consideration for program content. Please use the age guidelines provided in each story time program description to decide which one is the best fit for your child. Although younger and older siblings are welcome, you will find that the program content focuses on the developmental needs for the ages indicated for each of the listed programs. For example, story times for babies will focus on the developmental needs of babies, and preschool story time will address the developmental needs of older children who are acquiring early literacy skills critical for school success. Content for story time programs is based on current research in brain development, early childhood education, and Nevada's pre-K standards.
May I switch to a different program or to a different session? The answer to both questions is "yes". Your child's maturity level and developmental age will help guide your choice of programs. Your child's experience in a particular program will be the best benchmark for choosing the right program.
What if my child is unable to attend their normally scheduled story time session? Children miss their story time sessions for any number of reasons that range from illness to scheduling conflicts. If you miss a session, please feel welcome to attend another session that week. The evening and weekend story time sessions are also a great way to make up a missed program.
What if I'm late to story time? Come in! It's never too late to join the fun.
May I bring siblings? Yes, siblings are always welcome. However, we ask that parents as much as possible keep sibling distractions to a minimum. You may come and go during the story time session as needed to help maintain an enjoyable story time experience for everyone.
This is my first experience with story time what should I expect? Anything can happen and usually does. It may take a period of adjustment for a child who is new to the story time experience. This is normal. The length of time it takes a child to become comfortable in story time depends on many factors. Just be patient...it will happen. Some helpful tips: Relax! we've all been first time parents; make story time a regular part of their daily routine that fits into meal and nap time schedules; "come and go" as needed during story time to help calm and reassure a child about the new experience; extend the story time experience at home with books and related activities; don't worry about a "perfect" outcome for any craft or story time activity; join in the activities--children love seeing their parents involved in the story time experience; take the opportunity to network with other parents--staying after for a short time if possible enables children to interact with other children; take some time to browse for books; and meet Princess Scales.
